Artist Statement

I adore creating collages.
An old renewed art, which allows me to express myself with freedom, creativity and fantasy.
With obvious simplicity I put together cuts and scraps of my own or someone else's images.
I put some color spray here and there and fix dreams, memories and feelings on the paper.
The result is a fantastic world of signs, only apparently chaotic.
The unusual elements are superimposed, they mix and they meet to start unusual images.
I try to give body to a nonexistent reality, belonging to a fantastic and poetic world.
A caprice of forms which is seen not only with the eye but also with the imagination.
I try to give a world of emotion to the eyes of those who look upon them.
A game? Maybe or maybe not.

This book/exhibition was first presented at the Municipal Exhibition of Kalamata on December 2010. The text, as well as the exhibition, is trying to establish an overview of recycled/reused elements within Hellenic Art since 1960. This date, more or less, is the birth of the phenomenon among these shores since Greece never experienced simultaneous versions of the historic avant-gardes before the War. Therefore the creative explosions of experimental and provocative movements, especially during the 60s and 70s, tried to catch up and encapsulate both the older and missed movements such as Dada, Surrealism or Cubism and to try to lead parallel ways to the newer avant-gardes such as Fluxus or Nouveau Realisme and, in the same time, explore a more native, local sort of artistic personality. The exhibition/text then moves on to the newer versions of the use of the readymade in greek art in the 80s, 90s and 00s, therefore trying to identify the future of such a creation among the contemporary artistic community.

Director's note: A few years ago I sent Bob Rizzo a box of small found objects to induce him to make a work for the museum. A few months later, Ducksonge is what he sent. A wonderful fetish assemblage sculpture with a wooden duck head on the wooden body of what might be an african sculpture with collage material on it. I am not sure I can identify all of the items attached to this work but they include, various types of old nails, a mojo bag with who knows what in it, leather, feathers, chain, wooden bead necklace, a horn of something, a large tooth of something that I wouldn't want mad at me. rivets, glass vile, bells, a padlock, bits of cloth, another horn, smashed bottle caps,shells, bones, small wooden finials, a milagro of a burro, ribbon, a shoe string, a dream catcher, a quill and who knows what else on a wooden base. The whole thing was then carefully patinaed with a special secret mixture containing rust to give the work a visual integrity. One has the feeling that the work is a fetish of a protector that stands with a watchful eye ready to defend against injustice.

Living at the end of the great age of print, I work in the wonderful and humble
medium of paper collage. My work is constantly developing through new source
materials and processes. I express my view of the contemporary world thought, a
vocabulary of images, forms, edge and colors. Collage has limitless possibilities.

As an artist I enjoy the hunting and gathering aspect of paper collage, the sorting
and categorizing of images. It’s intriguing to physically develop an image from
paper elements layer-by-layer, elements with their inherent scales and textures.
To create and define an image through editing, tearing, and trimming present
their own inherent challenges. These challenges are what makes paper collage
interesting to me.

We may be living at the end of the great age of print, but I don’t believe print and
paper will disappear entirely. It’s easier to have something printed today than
in the past. What is being lost is the quantity and diversity of print and paper
ephemera. These are the sources I want to save and use.

I have read that collage was the medium that defined the 20th Century. I believe
it will define the 21st Century as well.

My collage or assemblage making process usually begins as a response
to found images or materials I happen to come across, or items I have
saved, sometimes for decades. Intuition and maturity are also factors in my
process. Since I depend so much on symbolism for the content in my work,
sometimes it takes years for me to see the expressive potential of something
I threw into a box or filed away in my image morgue.

In this case, though, with Keep Up Your Guard, the materials came
immediately during a visit to the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
I had one of those lucky days where the piece seemed to come together as
I picked through one hardware bin after another. I have to say this is a fun
process, and one I always enjoy. I had some old magazines laying around
on my work tables, and as I looked through them for just the right images to
include a couple emerged that after some editing worked perfectly.

I enjoyed making this piece especially since the wood and nails came from
an old demolished house in the city. Also, this process was really positive
for me because I was not only able to express in a really healthy way some
personal concerns I was having at that time, but I was able also to preserve a
part of history that might otherwise have been burned or buried in a landfill.

Collage has a long history as a medium for expression of social and cultural issues, but at this point in
my life, closer to the end, I am interested in the beauty of collage. The process of touching, collecting,
tearing, arranging papers, adding paint, bits and pieces, is part of a very personal experience. Collage
expresses something I can’t express with words. I find it cathartic and essential to my well-being. Color
is a large part of it—again, words escape me. I find collage brings some sense of order, in a small way, to
my existence in a larger world that doesn’t always make sense.

I make small-scale mixed media works on paper. To me, working small resonates with very personal
experiences such as reading, writing, collecting and remembering. I am, somewhat nervously,
experimenting with larger format pieces. My work incorporates references to organic/biological forms. I am interested in the interdependence between the natural world and one’s private world. Most

Artist's Statement

I grew up in a lovely English village called Cookham Dean, known for its famous and eccentric resident, wartime artist Stanley Spencer whose stylized scenes in the 1940s of Cookham village life and residents have hung in the nations leading museums. He described Cookham as a “village in Heaven”.

My parents, both artists, were also great collectors and childhood holidays were often spent searching for bits and pieces, usually on a chilly beach somewhere.

From a very early age I have collected things and arranged them. Now, more recently, I understand this as a need to give order to things, partly to make order out of chaos but also to show things to their full potential and to highlight subtle connections and differences. Hence, much of the work has a sense of formality and a strong structure even when it is playful.

This constant search for “stuff” which appeals (often for the most obscure reasons), is as much a part of the work process as are the thoughts instigated by the things I collect and then the physical construction of a work of art at the end.

I hope to highlight things which are often inherently humble, maybe discarded, rusted, distorted or faded but have had a past life and use somewhere else. I don’t analyze too deeply what the initial attraction is to this strange mix of collected objects. Things mean something for all sorts of reasons. They may simply be beautiful, quirky, sentimental or have strong associations.

I love the element of mystery surrounding old objects – the questions as to their meaning, their origin and age – in other words, their “secret lives”.

Groups of items and collections seem to be a way of reinforcing something by means of repetition. Having lectured in Textiles for many years, I understand how the repetition of an image alters one’s perception of it and allow one to see it in a fresh way.

I am attracted to the small scale because it gives a sense of intimacy – drawing you in close. I like the idea of something that can be held in the hand and examined rather than demand that you stand back and remove yourself in order to absorb an idea.

For similar reasons, in the last few years, my work has become more interactive. Things open up, light up, hide secrets then reveal themselves requiring participation and an element of surprise and hopefully instilling the same sense of fun and discovery that these objects hold for me.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I use collage to express my feelings about what I see around me. I live in the rolling rural landscape of southeastern Wisconsin in what is known as the Kettle Moraine, an area that was sculpted by glaciers eons ago. I'm attempting to capture the feeling of the land here - the austere beauty of winter to the lush palette of summer greens.

My subjects also include the wide fields not long for the developer's excavator and the disappearing barns

and farmhouses. These things are important to me and I mourn their passing. By working small I hope to draw the viewer in. I want to communicate the preciousness of what we are losing. I think it is an interesting paradox that I can use bits and pieces from my very modern life, such as junk mail and current magazines, to tell this story.

Artist Statement
I don't see my work as collage – for me it is painting: The paint I use comes with
pictures in it, and as it doesn't blend, painting with it is like the laying of a jig-saw
puzzle, one that is open-ended, and without rules. I don't stockpile material – I like it
fresh: I don't go hunting for it, it comes to me. In that way, each piece retains its roots
in the material: I work with it, not against it. Mind from matter, in other words.

In my work I (ab)use iconical imagery, both classical and contemporary, to summon
a sense of recognition. Figuring out the connection between the chosen image and the
material used to produce it, is perhaps the most entertaining part.

Statement

Collage is wonderfully open ended and it appeals to many artists of all ages, experience
and skill. It is a forgiving process. There are those who practice perfection which can
dazzle even the most jaded. Others like myself, move quickly through ideas, moving
along in an expedient way, layering over mishaps, building to a conclusion without
regard to ‘proper’ technique and materials. My intent as an artist and writer is always to
find the poetry in the materials while being in the moment to reach something that feels
fresh and new. I offer this poem, a collage of words that I wrote in 2009.i

Statement:

Collage is an art medium that inherently links the past to the present, always being an invention from one art form transforming itself from time and place. When Picasso began sticking together found objects to his paintings in the early part of the last century, who knew the literal cutting and pasting would evolve into the virtual world of photoshop magic. Through the years collage has been used to explore architecture. From Le Corbusier and the constructivists to Bernhard Hoesli and Colin Rowe, collage has been used as a tool to explore and teach ideas of transparency and three dimensional space. Although collage has transformed into other subsets of assemblage, bricolage, and montage, the medium always retained its heart of being a starting point to an unknown end, a beginning.

Statement:

In today’s world we are bombarded with imagery. Sometimes this imagery makes
impressions on one’s mind that only the subconscious can attempt to mill through
(i.e.-persuasive advertising, horror movie nightmares etc.). For me, collage is
the answer to exposing the effects of media imagery of the past and present to
determine its sometimes constructive and often destructive effects on our minds.
My studio space can also be said to exist as a “collecting point” for everything from
the most obscure printed materials to objects existing in our everyday popular
culture. The majority of my work, though often not devoid of humor, presents the
stark reality of cultural and media influence ticking ‘right beneath our nose’. In
this way, I see my process of making as “visual journalism”. I am reporting on the
impressions and effects on individuals when exposed to this imagery in our daily
lives. The juxtaposition of visual “remnants” both new and old calls into question
their role in our society. These seemingly unrelated realities lie beneath the surface
in our technological age. They are propelling us forward before we realize the
effects of our exposure. Nor do we consider any antidotal possibilities. Collage
exists as a potential catalyst to visually question. We are encouraged to decipher
and redefine the imagery in our minds.

The twenty-first century artist has been freed from the restraints of a single medium, allowing us to explore the world in a truly creative way. Each is able to come to their artwork from an individual point and add or subtract media that suits the expression and viewpoint desired. Even as the move to electronic media removes tactile elements and separates humans physically, there is a growing attraction to the multi-layered, highly textured artworks that bring us back together and anchor the human experience in a physical space. My own works begin with black and white photographs adhered onto two or three dimensional substrates; I add found objects, collage elements and layers of color and texture, like the cumulative memories and moments of life that project onto a single moment of time.

ARTIST STATEMENT

What I do is fashion design, in collage technique.
I started to work on collage in 1997 when I made few reproductions of Gustav Klimt's artworks.
Later in 2002 I studied basics of fashion design.

When I finished 1 year course, I didn't continue in production but rather started to develop my fashion
ideas in other direction.

Apart from sketching and getting a product alive, I explore and experiment with fashion as art, and
collage gives me unlimited possibilities to express myself. In the paper, I find everything I need to
present my ideas visually (forms, colors, patterns..) and the most important of all – I'm having fun with
it.

It’s like a play; a game of puzzle sometimes. The starting point is a woman’s face and further I design
the artwork with paper cuttings. It’s like tailoring.Every piece has its story.

Recently, I have started using vinyl music records as a base for my artwork. I’m also a musician and
very much inspired by old records as sound carriers and the glow of the vinyl; therefore, symbolically I
feel like doing fashion design with paper cuttings on "the sound" or "the music" itself.

Thru this whole creative process I came up with artworks which can be hung on a wall, or become
alive as clothing,headwear, accessories,etc.

Artist Statement:
As a contemporary form of making art, collage is interesting to me for several different reasons. In addition to the more traditional aesthetic aspects of a piece (color, composition, etc.), collage functions largely through the juxtaposition of imagery. This seems particularly well suited to modern day society because of the widespread ability to share information, use multi-media, and gather materials from pre-existing sources. The juxtaposition of imagery has profound potential for generating meaning. When one places seemingly unrelated images in a shared context, the images interact and resonate with each other to create a layered experience for the viewer. I liken this process to a dream. When we sleep our minds become busy sorting information which we see in the form of seemingly random images, experiences, and feelings mingling in a shared environment. It is only upon waking that we realize that individual aspects of the dream were odd or out of place. In that moment of the dream everything belongs together (regardless of time or space) and works to create something vivid and beautiful that is much larger than the sum of its parts. This is what I love about the form of collage: its potential to make meaning out of the surreal cohesion of unrelated energies.

Statement:

My introduction to collage and assemblage as a serious art happened in a workshop I took with Betye Saar (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6688207 ) Seeing 'The Liberation of Aunt Jemima,' learning the story behind the inspiration of the work, and how the medium of assemblage itself is the carrier of the message, is a formative influence in how I approach this art form. In addition to sharing her own artistry, Saar was a wealth of knowledge in visual language and techniques. The experience with her ended on the note of "go dumpster diving, rummaging, and while sifting through ephemera find your own aesthetic and voice". In the early 1980's during the time I was in her class, a dominant influence in the arts was minimalism. The drive seemed to be to eliminate anything superfluous. IE., Get rid of the wing of the bird, and keep the curve. It seemed as if anything visceral and tactile was a cheap trick or distraction from "real art". Real music didn't have a melody, real visual art didn't have lush painterly sensuality, and real architecture forgot about its relationship to human scale. Assemblage and collage seemed like air and water to me, necessary for the life and survival of the human element of artmaking within the larger dry desert of intellectual art. This box assemblage is created in memory of the emotion I felt when first seeing assemblage: assemblages and collages as visual melodies and carriers of humanistic expression and communication.

I'm attracted to collage because it is truly a universal language. Collage making is something I can do anywhere and doesn't require costly materials. Creating a collage can be as simple as tearing up old magazines and pasting together images to say something new. This process allows me to create new realities. It's magical and it is the randomness, playfulness and the unexpected results found in joining unrelated items that excite me. Collage goes against predictability. This is a antique book illustration with collage elements. The work takes on a surrealistic dynamic from the artist cleverly turning the illustration upside down and using the plume of smoke as if a billowing sleeve for the female hand element thus deemphisizng the gravity of the landscape and increasing the spiritual aspect by the hand materializing out of the smoke gently touching the opening of a rose. Perhaps a comment on a female twist of Michaelangelo's famous scene of God touching the hand of Adam, infusing him with life. The rose in this case representing Eve perhaps.

About the Artist

Eva Eun-Sil Han was born in Korea where she lived for 27 years. She was first introduced to collage in primary school. As a child she loved to play with papers, like “drawing paper, paper dolls, cutting them out, making their outfits.” She studied for two years at the Design Institute of Graphic Art in Seoul, Korea and one year at the L’Atelier d’Art de la Grange des Champs, Belgium.
Only [recently], when Eva Eun-Sil Han encountered the collages of Max Ernst did she start to use collage as a means of artistic expression. In her work she combines material from any kind of ready-made mass media, such as newspapers, magazines or old books. Eva Han prefers to use knife and glue rather than working with pixels on a computer screen, because it allows her to touch, feel and smell the different source papers. Especially old paper smells good to her.
To Eva Han, the appeal of collage lies in the fact that you can combine “idiosyncratic elements in one single space. And also use juxtaposition of ready-made images transposed into artistic compositions without cohesive syntax.”
Collage gives her unlimited room for imagination: “I don’t need any preparations – all I need is my Exacto knife, scissors, glue and papers and my subconscious mind. With the collage the unexpected happens.”

Artist's Statement:

In the late 1960s, I made a few collages and can't remember what inspired me to begin. However, I do remember tearing up magazines, crumpling the images, soaking them in tea and scattering them over heated floors to dry. I still have them...they are my foundation. I returned to collage in 2009 and since, am always in the process of doing.

Working with ongoing series which sometimes include my photography, I enjoy combining the art along with often a subtle humor, my own love and collection of ephemera, early photographs, and am intrigued by what can come from the scraps created from my other collages. All of this, its components spanning 100 years, comes together in this piece, 'I Made This!' ... inspired by the centennial.

I view collage as a form of magick. To quote Comte de Lautréamont, “Chance meeting on a dissecting table of a sewing machine and an umbrella”. Many of the my collages use juxtaposition to create effect, image and text, sign and signifier. Objects are brought together with the process of making of these strange marriages left visible. My work is about expressing how something makes me ‘feel’ rather than solely
the way it ‘looks’. I am also interested in the way the subconscious mind interprets
images. The fragments I find from everyday life, both man-made and from nature
become a starting point in my work, providing inspiration or forming an integral part
within the work. I believe that by using real life fragments combined with my own
creativity, the work conveys layers of meaning which blur the boundaries between art
and life.

I have always been a collector of interesting objects and it seemed a natural
progression that found objects would become part of my work. The creation of
Collage and Assemblage provides an endless opportunity for the re-combination and
layering of materials, inviting new interpretations.

My magpie hoard is full of old books, papers, tickets, feathers, driftwood, textiles,
stones, glass, rusty metal pieces, old sheet music and more. The signs of wear and tear
and the passing of time produce marks which sometimes tell the story of their history.
I ponder the life cycle of these items, looking back to where they may have begun
their journey, how a seed became a tree that grew and was once part of a forest. After
the passage of many seasons, the tree was felled, processed and ultimately became
paper. Some of the paper was used to produce travel tickets, which touched the lives
of people so far away from its origins. I may find that ticket, discarded, blowing
around on a windy street until it lands at my feet and becomes part of my ‘store’ of
papers, eventually becoming incorporated into a new piece of work. I try to use as
many recycled materials as I can in my work. It feels like a kind of ‘alchemy’.

My work, for the last few years has been mainly collage and creating small
assemblages. The materials I gather provide inspiration but I also look to ancient
history and the natural world. I am drawn to the past, mysteries, and to the unseen
aspects of our lives, in the world in which we live. I am fascinated by myths and
legends, alchemy and magic. Some of my work explores life, beauty, light and dreams
whilst others have explored the darker aspects of our nature in the imagination and
nightmares. More recent concerns developing in my work have been around the
natural environment and ecological issues. Many new works reflect my feelings about
the natural world and our place in it.

Where must we hide when it comes from inside - J. Taylor

For as long as I can recall, I collect objects that draw my attention and
touch me deeply in an ultimate personal way. At first they appeared
as a random collection of endearing objects, drawings and little
paintings that later became a kind of visual diary to me. After a while,
I also began to tell corresponding stories bringing these objects even
more gently together. Thus doodling, I found - often unwillingly - new
meanings and associations within the emerging combinations of
objects, colors and words.
Later on I also began to realize, that certain painful experiences
somehow colored my life, thus emerged and appeared, unconsciously.
Perhaps that is also why each time I put something in my diary,
a thought, a fantasy, fragments of a dream, about a country, in a
sustained but gentle effort to taste, understand, and perhaps even
love that country with its specific culture, I feel as having emerged as
one with more gathered insight and new sense of meanings in the
shortfalls of that particular culture and so as I believe my own alleged
and assumed shortfalls.

Ouida Touchon is a visual artist who spends most of her waking moments at the easel or the press. She has her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in Painting, and her Masters of Art from the University of Missouri at Kansas City in studio arts. In addition she has studied with mentors and distinguished printmakers and painters in Italy, Mexico, and the United States.

In 2003 she moved to Las Cruces, in southern New Mexico and opened Cruz Nopal Art Studio where she produces unique paintings and handprints in a variety of styles. Artist Statement

I started making collages while still a student at the Art Students League in NY, and continued the practice while on a Fulbright Grant in Italy, and during a summer when I lived in San Francisco. I utilized the different papers that I found in these locations. Collage allows me to make art when I am traveling and don’t have access to a studio.

When I was doing large scale acrylic paintings I often added rice paper to my canvas. Recently, I have been working primarily in paper collage and artist’s books. I love the variety of materials that can be used in collage. My work incorporates painted, handmade, oriental, and acid free papers, as well as objects, transparent film, boxes, photos, my own prints, maps, string and text. Collage is a discipline in which I can express my ideas on memory, travel, language and nature.

Shapeshifters

Is it a painting? Is it a sculpture? An artist’s book? A miniature screen? Shapeshifters are one-
of-a-kind folding artworks designed to create a small space in which to let your imagination
roam free. In Shapeshifters I play with expansion and contraction and differing viewpoints, as
well as offering the possibility of interaction by the viewer. The folding format alludes to the
unfolding of time and space and offers the potential of change and new vision. Shapeshifters
are constructed from museum board with mulberry paper hinges. The acrylic paint is applied
in layers to create depth and luminosity. Meditative, expansive, reminiscent of many eras, each
